Spring Closet Clean Out
Spring Clean Your Closet: A Breath of Fresh Air for Your Wardrobe!
As the days get longer and the weather warms up, there’s a certain energy in the air that inspires renewal. And just like we spring clean our homes, it’s the perfect time to give our closets the same revitalising treatment!
A spring closet clean out isn’t just about decluttering; it’s about making space for new possibilities, rediscovering forgotten treasures, and curating a wardrobe that truly reflects your style for the season ahead.
Ready to dive in? Here’s how to tackle your closet and emerge with a refreshed, functional,
How to Clean out and Re Fresh your closet in time for Spring.
Step 1: The Grand Purge – Take Everything Out!
Yes, everything. This might seem daunting, but it’s the most effective way to see exactly what you’re working with. Lay all your clothes, shoes, and accessories on your bed, floor, or any available surface. Seeing it all at once can be quite illuminating (and sometimes a little shocking!).
Step 2: Sort and Sift – The “Keep, Donate, Sell, Toss” Method
Now comes the fun (and sometimes tough) part. Pick up each item and ask yourself these crucial questions:
- Do I love it? If it doesn’t spark joy (thank you, Marie Kondo!), it’s probably not a keeper.
- Does it fit me well right now? Be honest. If it’s too tight, too loose, or just plain uncomfortable, let it go. Holding onto “someday” clothes only takes up valuable space.
- Have I worn it in the last year? If not, there’s a good chance you won’t wear it again. (Exceptions for sentimental items or occasion wear, of course!)
- Is it in good condition? Look for rips, stains, faded colours, or irreparable damage.
Based on your answers, sort your items into these four piles:
- Keep: These are your absolute favourites, items that fit well, and pieces you genuinely wear and love.
- Donate: Clothes in good condition that you no longer want. Look for local charities or op-shops that accept clothing donations.
- Sell: Items that are in excellent condition, perhaps designer brands, or still have tags. Consider online marketplaces or consignment stores.
- Toss/Recycle: Items that are beyond repair or too worn out to donate. Check if your local council or textile recycling programs accept these.
Step 3: Clean and Organize Your Space
Before putting anything back, take the opportunity to clean your actual closet. Wipe down shelves, vacuum the floor, and air it out. Consider adding cedar blocks or sachets to keep things fresh.
Now, think about organization. Group similar items together: all your dresses, then skirts, then trousers, then tops. Within those categories, you can organize by colour or by type (e.g., long-sleeved tops, short-sleeved tops).
Invest in good quality hangers – uniform hangers can make a huge difference to the look and feel of your closet. Fold bulky items like sweaters to prevent stretching. Use drawer dividers for smaller items like socks and underwear.
Step 4: Reassess and Fill Gaps (Mindfully!)
Once your “keep” pile is neatly put away, take a good look at your newly organized wardrobe. Do you notice any gaps? Perhaps you need a versatile new jacket, a classic pair of jeans, or some updated basics.
This is the time to make a list of anything you genuinely need, rather than impulse buying. Think about versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Focus on quality over quantity.
Step 5: Maintain Your Pristine Wardrobe
The cleanout isn’t a one-and-done deal. To keep your closet looking great and functioning efficiently:
- One in, one out: When you buy something new, consider if there’s an old item you can let go of.
- Regular tidying: Take a few minutes each week to put things back in their place.
- Seasonal swaps: As seasons change, you might want to rotate certain items to the back or into storage to keep your everyday wardrobe more accessible.
A spring closet cleanout can feel incredibly liberating. Not only will you have a more functional and aesthetically pleasing wardrobe, but you’ll also gain clarity on your personal style and make space for a fresh start this spring. Happy decluttering!
