How to Prepare and Clean your Home for Christmas

Phase 1: The Prepare – Making Space for Joy (4-6 Weeks Out)

The secret to a stress-free Christmas clean is starting early and focusing on decluttering, not just scrubbing. You can’t truly clean a space that is drowning in stuff.

Focus Areas:

• The Three-Box Method: Go through each room, especially the common areas (living room, dining room, entry), with three empty boxes labeled “Keep,” “Donate/Sell,” and “Store.” Be ruthless! Making space now is the biggest gift you can give your future self.

• The Guest Zone Overhaul: If you are expecting overnight guests, tackle their designated room first. Clear out closets and drawers to make actual space for their belongings. Wash all guest bedding, and ensure the bathroom is stocked with fresh towels and toiletries.

• Kitchen Purge: The kitchen is the heart of holiday hosting. Clear out your pantry and fridge of expired items. You need the space for your festive ingredients and leftovers! Also, review your serving ware and platters—make sure everything you plan to use is clean and easily accessible.

• Schedule a Deep Service: Now is the time to schedule services you can’t do yourself, like steam-cleaning carpets, cleaning windows, or servicing the oven if it’s been neglected. These services often book up early in December.

Phase 2: The Clean – Bringing in the Sparkle (2 Weeks Out)

With the clutter cleared, you can now move onto the satisfying work of cleaning. Break down your home into three main zones: Kitchen, Bathrooms, and Common Areas.

1. Kitchen: The Engine of the Holidays

The kitchen will see the most action. Give it your all now so you only need to do light tidying later.

• Dust High and Low: Don’t forget the often-missed spots: ceiling fans, light fixtures, picture frames, and crown molding.
