Home Cleaning Tip for Dog Owners

Can My Home Look Like a Display Home?

Turning your everyday home into something that looks as pristine and inviting as a display home, all without spending a single cent, might sound like a dream, but it is absolutely achievable.

The secret lies not in buying new things, but in mastering the art of decluttering, meticulous cleaning with what you already have, and thoughtful arrangement. It’s about creating an illusion of spaciousness, order, and effortless style, leveraging the resources you possess right there in your residence.

How to Make Your Home Look like a display home by clearing out and cleaning up and using the items you already have in your home.

Step 1 – Decluttering

Our transformation begins with the most fundamental and impactful step: decluttering. This isn’t just tidying; it’s a ruthless edit of everything you own. Approach each room with a fresh eye, imagining it as if you were seeing it for the first time, just as a potential buyer would.

Start with surfaces – coffee tables, benchtops, shelves, and bedside tables. Remove every item, then only return those that are truly functional or bring you genuine joy.

Think of the “less is more” philosophy that display homes embody.

Those charming vignettes you see are curated, not accumulated.

Group similar items in odd numbers – three vases, five books, one interesting sculpture – to create visual balance without overcrowding. Anything that doesn’t fit this “functional or joyful” criteria needs to find a new home, either in storage (more on that later), given away, or, if truly unusable, recycled or discarded.

Pay particular attention to papers, mail, and miscellaneous items that tend to accumulate in entryways or on kitchen counters; these are instant clutter culprits.

Step 2 – Deep Cleaning

Once the clutter is banished, it’s time to unleash the power of deep cleaning using only your existing household staples. Forget expensive specialty cleaners; your pantry is a goldmine.

For an all-purpose cleaner, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in an old spray bottle. This natural powerhouse cuts through grease, disinfects surfaces, and leaves a streak-free shine on benchtops, sinks, and even glass.

If you’re sensitive to the vinegar smell, a few drops of lemon juice or even just leftover citrus peels infused in the vinegar for a week can help mask it.

Baking soda is another unsung hero. Sprinkle it on carpets and rugs, let it sit for 15-30 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly; it’s incredible for absorbing lingering odours and lifting grime.

For stubborn stains on sinks or tubs, a paste of baking soda and a little water works wonders as a gentle abrasive scrubber. Lemon halves are fantastic for shining chrome taps and removing hard water spots; simply rub, rinse, and buff with an old, clean cloth.

Old toothbrushes are perfect for scrubbing grout lines and tight corners in the bathroom and kitchen, giving those often-neglected areas a crisp, clean edge. Don’t underestimate the power of hot soapy water (using your regular dish soap) for wiping down cupboard fronts, skirting boards, and door frames.

For windows, simply spray with your vinegar solution and wipe with a crumpled newspaper or a clean, lint-free cloth (perhaps an old, clean t-shirt cut into rags) for a streak-free sparkle.

Step 3 – Styling

Now that everything is meticulously clean, the focus shifts to strategic styling and arrangement.

Display homes excel at creating a sense of calm and aspiration, and you can mimic this.

Think about creating vignettes, small styled groupings of objects, on visible surfaces. Use books you already own to create height, stacking two or three horizontally and placing a small decorative item (like a small plant, a piece of pottery, or a framed photo you already have) on top.

Rearrange existing furniture to create clear pathways and a sense of open flow, even in smaller rooms. Sometimes, just pulling a couch slightly away from a wall can make a room feel larger.

Fluff up all cushions on sofas and beds; neatly fold throws and drape them strategically to add texture and softness.

For display home beds, the key is layers and precision. Use your existing sheets and blankets, but aim for crispness. Smooth out wrinkles, tuck in corners tightly, and then layer on a neatly folded doona or quilt.

Arrange pillows symmetrically, and perhaps add one or two decorative cushions you already own, even if they’re simply extra pillows with a different cover. The goal is an inviting, hotel-like presentation.

When it comes to lighting, utilise what you have. Ensure all lightbulbs are working, and consider turning on lamps in strategic spots to create warm, inviting pools of light, even during the day.

Open blinds and curtains wide to let in as much natural light as possible, showcasing lovely daylight. Clean the light fixtures themselves to ensure maximum brightness.

Finally, think about the sensory experience. While you’re not buying scented candles, you can naturally freshen the air. Open windows for 15-20 minutes a day to allow fresh air to circulate. Place small bowls of white vinegar (it neutralizes odours) in discreet spots, or simply put a few slices of lemon in a bowl of water near an area you want to freshen.

A well-cleaned home naturally smells better, but these small touches elevate the experience.

Transforming your home into a display-like sanctuary is less about spending money and more about investing time and intention. It’s about seeing your space with fresh eyes, appreciating what you have, and presenting it in its best possible light.

The result isn’t just a clean house; it’s a feeling of renewed appreciation for your home, creating an atmosphere that feels welcoming, serene, and effortlessly stylish.
